The Lobby

Documented 2024

The lobby of the Crescent Hotel is the first space guests enter, and for some it is where the hotel announces itself most directly. Reports of paranormal activity in the lobby are less frequent than in the upper floors or the basement, but they are among the most striking — witnessed in full light, in public, by guests who were not looking for anything unusual.

The most commonly reported figure is a man in period clothing — described as wearing a dark suit consistent with the late 19th or early 20th century — standing near the fireplace on the east wall. Witnesses describe him as motionless, facing the room, and present for only a few seconds before he is gone. Several accounts note that other guests in the lobby at the time did not appear to see him.

He was standing by the fireplace when I checked in. I assumed he was another guest. I asked the desk clerk about him later and she looked at me like I had said something strange.

Activity near the front desk has been reported by hotel staff as well as guests. Objects moved, the sense of a presence behind the counter, and on at least one occasion a staff member reporting that someone spoke their name when no one was nearby. Staff accounts are less frequently documented than guest accounts, but they exist.

The lobby's activity may be connected to the building's long history as a public-facing space — a place where people arrived, waited, and departed across more than a century of use. Whether what remains is residual or something more deliberate has not been determined.
